A Letter to Self
When I enrolled in the course Empowering for Success in the Workplace, my primary objective was to strengthen my capacity to adapt and lead within an ever-changing professional environment. With over two decades of experience in the maritime industry, particularly in marina operations and yacht management, I have always valued the technical and operational aspects of my work. However, I recognised the importance of complementing these skills with continued personal development, professional resilience, and transformational leadership strategies. This course provided a structured opportunity to bridge my established expertise with new approaches that can enhance both my career trajectory and the quality of service I deliver.
Throughout the programme, I engaged with a variety of practical tools and strategies. Learning how to tailor my résumé with targeted keywords, enhance my professional presence on LinkedIn, and set SMART goals with measurable milestones allowed me to refine my professional brand. These exercises were not abstract; they translated into actionable outcomes, such as improved visibility in the maritime sector and greater preparedness for future leadership opportunities. Equally valuable were the insights gained in interpersonal development—cultivating empathy, practicing active listening, managing professional boundaries, and identifying potential biases that may influence workplace dynamics.
This course has also reshaped my perspective of success and leadership. I now view my achievements not solely in terms of technical expertise, but as a balance between operational precision, effective communication, and personal growth. The course reaffirmed that resilience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are as critical to leadership as industry knowledge. By completing this programme, I have demonstrated my commitment to continuous learning and to aligning my maritime leadership with global best practices. This experience has been instrumental in preparing me to embrace new challenges and opportunities, while continuing to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the yachting and maritime sector.
